A CSV of your emails lets you sort by date, filter by sender and count messages in Excel or Google Sheets. It's handy for audits, client lists, or finding that one email from 2019 when search keeps failing.
Here are two ways to get MBOX mail into CSV, from Thunderbird, Google Takeout or Apple Mail, plus how to open the result without garbled text.
01
Method 1: Thunderbird + ImportExportTools NG (free)
- Install Thunderbird and the ImportExportTools NG add-on.
- Import the MBOX: right-click Local Folders > ImportExportTools NG > Import mbox file.
- Right-click the imported folder and choose ImportExportTools NG > Export all messages in the folder > Spreadsheet (CSV).
- Save the file.
The add-on's CSV export is mostly an index: subject, sender, recipient and date. Message bodies aren't the main point of it, and you repeat the steps for each folder.
02
Method 2: MBOX Converter (bodies, all folders, many files)
Magic Soft MBOX Converter writes one row per email with separate columns for sender, recipient, CC, subject, date and time, and the message body. You don't need Thunderbird installed.
01Load the MBOX files
Pick Single file for one MBOX, or Folder tree to load a whole directory. Google Takeout and Apple Mail exports both work.
02Select what to export
Preview the folders, search if you need specific messages, and tick them.
03Choose CSV
Click Export, choose CSV, and set a date range to keep the sheet focused.
04Export
Choose a destination and click Start Export.
The trial exports the first 10 emails of each MBOX file, so you can see the columns before buying.
03
Open the CSV in Excel without garbled text
- In Excel, go to Data > From Text/CSV.
- Set File Origin to 65001: Unicode (UTF-8).
- Check the preview shows names and subjects correctly, then click Load.
Cell limitsExcel cells hold 32,767 characters and Google Sheets cells 50,000. Long email bodies get cut off in the sheet, but the CSV file itself keeps the full text.
Once loaded, turn the data into a table (Ctrl+T) and add a PivotTable to count emails per sender or per month.
Summary
Thunderbird's add-on gives a free per-folder index. For bodies, many files and date filters, convert with MBOX Converter. Working from Outlook instead? See exporting PST emails to CSV.
