Step 1: Convert the CSV to VCF
Save the spreadsheet as CSV UTF-8 in Excel, then convert it:
- Free: import the CSV at contacts.google.com and export as vCard (for iOS Contacts).
- Offline: use Magic Soft CSV to VCF Converter, choose vCard 3.0 and single VCF file.
The full walkthrough is in how to convert CSV to VCF.
Use vCard 3.0iPhone and iCloud read 3.0 reliably. It's the safest choice unless you have a reason to pick another version.

Method 2: Email, AirDrop or Files (quickest)
- Email the VCF to yourself, AirDrop it from a Mac, or save it to iCloud Drive.
- On the iPhone, tap the file to open it.
- Tap Add All [number] Contacts, then choose to create new contacts.
Contacts go to your default account. Check Settings > Contacts > Default Account first so they land in iCloud and not in an old Exchange or Gmail account.
04
Method 3: Google Contacts sync
If you already keep contacts in Google, import the CSV at contacts.google.com and add your Google account on the iPhone (Settings > Contacts > Accounts > Add Account > Google) with Contacts switched on. The list syncs across without any VCF step.
05
Avoid and clean up duplicates
- Import once. Re-importing the same VCF creates a second copy of every contact.
- Recent iOS versions show Duplicates Found at the top of the Contacts list; tap it to merge.
- On iCloud.com you can select and delete a bad import before it spreads to your other devices.
Other problems such as garbled names or missing numbers are covered in the troubleshooting guide.
Summary
Convert the CSV to a single vCard 3.0 file, then import it through iCloud.com, by opening it on the phone, or through Google sync. Switching to Android instead? See importing CSV contacts to Android.
